House Plants

Temperature and humidity

Today most new homes have double-paned windows which reduce drafts and keep temperature and humidity more constant. In older homes, you can place a piece of cardboard, a screen or curtain between your plants and the sunlight during the hottest part of the day. This is determined by the size of your room. In large rooms you can move the plants away from the window. In a small room air circulation temperatures are higher and fluctuate from day to night. A hot atmosphere can cause stress which invites insect infestation.

Orchids need humidity and constant temperatures. If temperature and humidity are not easily controlled in your rooms, provide a three sided glass or Plexiglas enclosure for these incredible plants. Do some research. Find out what your particular plants require. For instance, violets need a cool, dry rest period before blooming. Your plants will reward you with wonderful foliage and extraordinary blooms.

Take heart. If your home is warm and humid in winter, it's probably a good place for your plants. Humidity can be solved by placing pebbles in water-filled saucers. The pot sits on the pebbles, not in the water. Misting helps, too. Humid loving plants will love this technique. Humidifiers are also an option. If your home is too dry, your family as well as the plants will appreciate the added moisture.
